It is situated 50 kms from Bratislava, 100 kms from Vienna (Austria) and 40kms from Györ (Hungary).

Dunajská Streda

(Veľké Dvorníky – Dunajská Streda 2 km)
Regional town Dunajská Streda- the heart of Danubian Lowland, or Great Rye Island. Historical monuments: Roman Catholic Church of St George in Gothic style from the 14th century. Evangelical Church from the 19th century. For the Art lovers: Gallery of contemprorary Slovako - Hungarian artists in a historical building from the 19th century called Villa Vermes, Museum of the Great Rye Island in the Yellow Castle (Žitnoostrovské múzeum v Žltom kaštieli) – constant exhibition of the cultural heritage of the region.

Vodné dielo Gabčíkovo

(Veľké Dvorníky – Vodné dielo Gabčíkovo 14 km)
Visit the complex of Water dam Gabcikovo. There is a 3 hour round boattrip that takes you through the gate of the dam. Learn how the dam was built and what changed in the area due to its building. You can marvel at the Flora and Fauna of the old river basin pf the Danube river and watch rare protected birds. You can also find a sign posted tourist track and good cycling paths.

You can also have a round trip on a boat from Gabcikovo to Cunovo throughout the whole dam. More information about the boat trips you can find on the website: www.lod.sk.

Győr

(Veľké Dvorníky – Győr 40 km)
One of the biggest cities in Hungary with the population of 130 thousand. You can find old historical buildings here and new shopping mall ÁRKÁD. In the old town you should visit: Basilica Minor from the 11th century, BISHOPS CASTLE AND EPISCOPAL PALACE – the exhibition keeps the memory of Vilmos Apor's bishops martyrdom alive, Esterhazy s Palace, Zichy s Palace, Old Town Hall, Benedictine Church from the 17th century. In the centre of the city on the Island there are organised international festivals like the Mediawave Festival. 20 km from Györ you can find The Benedictine Pannonhalma Archabbey or Territorial Abbey of Pannonhalma one of the oldest historical monuments in Hungary, founded in 996. It is located near the town, on top of a hill (282 m). Saint Martin of Tours is believed to have been born at the foot of this hill, hence its former name, Mount of Saint Martin (Hungarian: Márton-hegy). You can also visit the Aquapark at Raba Quelle in Györ, where again the thermal water has got helaing powers for the bones and muscles. This aquapark is one of the rare non chlorinated thermal spa centres in Hungary. The town also has got a Zoo, for the enjoyment of children and adults.

Šamorín

(Veľké Dvorníky – Šamorín 20 km)
In this big town you can visit the Calvinist Church from the 13th century with original frescoes and wall paintings, the most beautiful Gothic church of this region, or a Catholic Church, Evangelical Church and a roman chapel, a synagogue with exhibitions, a horse riding park and a golf course (Bác na Ostrove before Samorin).

Our holiday home is situated in the proximity of a protected area called Boheľovské rybníky, which is a 110 hectare large area. You can find rare plants (cladium mariscus) and birds nesting (Limosa limosa) . Protected are mainly the water birds during the time of nesting. (Netta Rufina, Ixobrychus minutu, Circus aeruginosus). The lake - it is a gravel pit used for swimming, or you can also take a leisure walk around it.

27 kms away to the South West ou can find the natural reserve called Číčovské mŕtve rameno, which is a dead river branch of the Danube river, formed during the big floods of 1899. Current state has been preserved ever since the second big flood in 1965. It is part of the Dunajské luhy Protected Landscape Area. The dead river branch and its surroundings are unique in Central Europe for the flora and fauna. Fauna is influenced by a wide variety of biotopes in the Landscape Area. For instance, it contains 109 species of molluscs, of which 22 are protected, hundreds of true bugs, for example the endemic species Thinobius korbeli from the rove beetles family. The tundra vole is one of the most notable little mammals living in this area. Dunajské luhy PLA is an important area for nesting and incubation of many water birds. Many rare species, such as the white-tailed eagle, little egret and purple heron, nest there. The whole Slovak-Hungarian part of the Danube is listed as an Important Bird Area. The Danube and surrounding bodies of water contain the highest number of species of fish in Slovakia. Rare and protected species include the wild form of the Common carp,Umbra krameri (European mudminnow) from the Esociformes order, Pelecus cultratus from the Cyprinidae family, and Proterorhinus marmoratus (Tubenose goby) from the Goby family.

The reserve is spread out on 134 hectare and from the Danube it is divided by an embankment, on which the international Danube cycling path leads through. The reserve is open for visitors every day from 15th July to 1st of March. Through the reserve there is a 6 km length study path with 12 information stops.
